What are the insulating properties of PrimaLoft®?
PrimaLoft® scores high with its excellent ratio of warmth, weight and volume. With its fibre thickness of less than one Denier (that’s less than one gram per 9,000 metres), PrimaLoft® fibres are finer than all other synthetic fibre insulation materials on the market. The result: better heat retention and more fill power.
Much like down, PrimaLoft® clings perfectly to the body, is compressible to a small size and extraordinarily warm. In some ways, however, the synthetic insulation is clearly superior to the natural material: Thanks to a special PFC-free impregnation, PrimaLoft® fibres are water-repellent. And even when wet, they retain their puffy shape and about 98% of their insulating properties. Unlike down, PrimaLoft® padding keeps you perfectly warm, even in the rain, in high humidity, or when you break a sweat. At the same time, water vapours can escape the clothing unhindered at any time – for a pleasantly dry feel.
In addition, PrimaLoft® is free of animal materials, making it ethically sound and allergy-friendly.
What are the different types of PrimaLoft®?
The classic PrimaLoft® insulation comes in three quality grades, which differ in fibre technology and blend: PrimaLoft® Gold, PrimaLoft® Silver and PrimaLoft® Black. Martini Sportswear uses only the manufacturer’s highest-performing insulation material, PrimaLoft® Gold.
PrimaLoft® Gold insulation
PrimaLoft® Gold is the “gold standard” for synthetic fibre padding and clearly one of the highest-performing synthetic insulations on the market. This high-tech material is made for outdoor adventurers who expect uncompromising comfort and performance in every moment out in nature – whether they are downhill or cross-country skiing, hiking, climbing, trail running or biking.
Within the three PrimaLoft® quality tiers mentioned above, Gold is the material with the highest insulation performance and the best warmth-to-weight ratio. It has impressively high fill power, a small pack size, is extremely light and breathable, and protects the body against heat loss, even in extreme conditions and under strain, without heat build-up.
Out of consideration for the environment, PrimaLoft® Gold is made from 100% recycled post-consumer materials (PET bottles). Like all fibres made by PrimaLoft®, this material is made and certified according to bluesign and OEKO-TEX 100 standards.
How warm is PrimaLoft® clothing?
The warmth of PrimaLoft® clothing depends on the design, the fibre quality (Gold, Silver, Black) and the PrimaLoft® fill power. The fill power refers to the area density of the insulation material, so it tells you how many grams of insulating PrimaLoft® fibres are contained per square metre. The higher this number, the warmer the garment.
Established fill volumes are:
- 40 to 60g/m²: in light jackets, for use in spring or autumn, as well as chilly summer days, or as a thin insulating layer under a shell.
- 100g/m²: in medium all-round insulation jackets, which retain heat on cold days and can be used as an outer or in-between layer.
- 130g/m²: in very warm winter jackets, which keep you warm in sub-zero temperatures.
Sometimes different fill powers are used in one garment, for example higher grammage on the torso, where you want more warmth, but less on the arms, where breathability and freedom of movement are essential.
How do I wash PrimaLoft® clothing?
PrimaLoft® clothing is very easy to care for and can be machine washed with liquid laundry detergent on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees Celsius. It shouldn’t be spun; but can be dried on a low setting in the tumble drier. Detailed care and washing instructions can be found on the care labels of all Martini Sportswear products.
